Buying Fine Dinnerware Sets

Most fine dinnerware comes in two popular types of material, porcelain and stoneware. Both of these can be used to make a seemingly endless variety of patterns in a wide array of colors that will be sure to compliment your decor. Before choosing your dinnerware set, be sure to give thought to the other pieces of tableware that you will be using, such as stemware, and flatware. Then choose the pattern and texture that will best compliment the entire table setting.

Most dinnerware sets come in 5 piece place settings. The standard pieces are: dinner plate, salad plate, soup bowl, cup, and saucer. If the dinnerware set is more informal it may contain only four pieces and substitute a mug for the cup and saucer. However, you can also find some sets that are more complete still, featuring other pieces such as a serving bowl, creamer, sugar bowl, and platter. Beyond that other individual pieces may also be avilable such as casserole dishes, gravy boat, tea pot, salt and pepper shakers, coffee pot, larger platters, and so on. So when selecting your china pattern it's a good idea to see what other accessories are avilable in that pattern in case you may wish to add them to your set.

Fine china and dinnerware sets have a reputation in the general public as being very fragile and requiring inordinate amounts of care in handling. The truth is that most fine china is a lot more hearty than you may think. Of course, you would not want to purposely bang them into each other or other hard surfaces, but handling them as you would most everyday dinnerware sets is fine and should not produce any excess wear and tear.

Storing fine china is an important matter since this is where more damage can occur than almost anywhere else. When stacking plates, many people slide them across each other as they stack. This can severely scratch the surface if done repeatedly, and so it is best to use a soft barrier between plates such as a paper towel to protect them from that kind of damage. Also, store cups and mugs on hooks to prevent damage to the handles.
